Ukraine will produce bulletproof vests from hemp
A new fiber hemp variety was unveiled at the recently held hemp event "Hemp Fest", which took place in the Sumy Region, to be used in the production of, among other things, bulletproof vests and underwear for the Ukrainian military. The variety is the result of the work of experts from the Northeast Institute of Agriculture of the National Academy of Agricultural Sciences of Ukraine and has been named "Sofia." It is presented as a versatile genetic whose plants yield both good fiber and seed.
Hemp Fest was held in the form of a scientific and practical seminar attended by leading scientists, farmers, businessmen and hemp industry specialists representing 10 regions of Ukraine. Participants were shown Sofia's crops, and a workshop was held on harvesting the seed part of hemp with a combine.
Industrial hemp is the basis for the production of gunpowder, which has no equivalent in the world, as well as high-quality raw materials for ropes and parachutes. Hemp fibers are in no way inferior to the synthetic Kevlar used for bulletproof vests. Shields made of hemp can withstand shots from anti-tank cartridges, while being lighter than Kevlar.

The seminar highlighted the development of hemp cultivation under wartime conditions, as well as in the context of Ukraine's reconstruction. Another issue discussed was the use of hemp products for the military. In addition, experts raised the issue of legal regulations for industrial hemp and the issue of processing seed hemp according to the direction of use, as well as the economic efficiency of seed hemp cultivation in Ukraine.
