Italy will hold a referendum on cannabis legalization early next year? The required number of votes has been collected

The organizers of the referendum, supporters of cannabis legalization, have collected the required 500,000 votes online in a few days to register it. They still have until the end of the month to collect n signatures in support of the cannabis legalization referendum, and the campaign is still underway.

This is a special day not only for the organizers, but also for citizens

- said Senator, former EU Commissioner and former Foreign Minister Emma Bonino, a supporter and promoter of the action.

Italian hemp referendum

According to Italian tradition, referendums are always held on Sundays, around April 15 and June 15.

There are three types of referendum in Italy: abrogative, approval and local. The former is the most popular, and it is in this form that the referendum on the legalization of marijuana in Italy will be held.

By holding an abrogative referendum, the electorate can bring about the total or partial cancellation of an existing law or other legislation under the law.

Italian law provides two options for triggering the referendum procedure. The first is the citizens' initiative. It consists in the fact that 500,000 citizens eligible to vote can demand a referendum on an issue. The second possibility is an initiative by 5 regional councils (Italy is divided into regions), and in each of these councils the initiative must be approved by an absolute majority. The tribunal of cassation then verifies the legitimacy of the referendum, i.e. the required formal issues and, of course, the necessary number of valid signatures.

Italian cannabis activists have set their sights on a citizens' initiative, and they have succeeded.

Polls show that the legalization of cannabis is supported by 57 percent of the public.

Is Italy moving toward cannabis legalization? It seems quite real. A few days ago, we reported that Italy was decriminalizing the cultivation of four subsistence cannabis plants.
